Outside Ekas Technical Snapshot
Outside Ekas is a true “swell magnet.” Because it sits on the edge of the bay and faces the open ocean, it picks up every bit of energy from the Indian Ocean. It is the go-to spot when everywhere else is flat.

The Break: A Vertical Drop and Massive Walls
Outside Ekas is a high-performance wave that requires confidence. It is a long, fast left that can offer everything from heavy drops to wide-open carving sections.
The Peak
The take-off at Outside Ekas is often vertical and intense, especially when the swell is overhead. Once you make the drop, the wave opens up into a massive wall. It is a dream for goofy-footers or anyone looking to practice high-speed turns on a long, unobstructed face.
The Channel
One of the best features of Outside Ekas is the very defined channel. This makes the paddle back out much easier than at many other reef breaks, as you can bypass the impact zone entirely.
Lombok Surf Seasons: When to Surf Outside Ekas
Outside Ekas is a year-round destination, but its personality changes with the seasons.
- Dry Season (May to September): This is when the largest swells hit. Outside Ekas can hold waves up to 10 or 12 feet. It is a serious challenge for advanced surfers during these months.
- Wet Season (October to April): It remains very consistent. Even on small days, it will produce fun, chest-high waves that are perfect for intermediate surfers looking to improve their reef-riding skills.
LMBK Local Secret: The “Ekas Double”
Because the two main breaks in the bay (Inside and Outside) react differently to the tide, you can often score a “double session” by timing it right.
Pro Tip: Start your morning at Outside Ekas during the pushing mid-tide when the power is at its peak. As the tide gets too high and the wave starts to “fatten out,” have your boat captain take you to Inside Ekas. The inside break often starts working perfectly just as the outside begins to slow down. At LMBK Surf House, we coordinate our boat trips to ensure you get the maximum water time at both spots.
Directions: How to Get to Outside Ekas from Kuta Lombok
Outside Ekas is located on the eastern side of the island.
Step 1: Drive your scooter or car roughly 50 to 60 minutes east from Kuta to Awang harbor. The road is well-paved and scenic.
Step 2: Hire a local boat (perahu) from the harbor.
Step 3: The boat ride to Outside Ekas takes about 15 to 20 minutes. It is a beautiful ride that takes you past the dramatic cliffs of the peninsula.
Outside Ekas FAQ
Power and size. While Inside Ekas is mellow and friendly, Outside Ekas picks up much more swell (usually 2-3 feet bigger, sometimes more). It is a heavier, faster wave that requires a higher skill level.
No. Even on smaller days, the wave has a lot of “push” and the reef is shallow. Beginners should head to Inside Ekas, which is much more sheltered and forgiving.
This spot comes alive on large Southwest swells. When big swells hit, the wave creates wedges and hollow “almond” barrels. North or Northeast winds are ideal for grooming the faces.
Just like Inside Ekas, you take a boat from Awang. The boat ride is slightly longer as the spot is further out and more exposed to the open ocean, sitting beneath dramatic cliffs.
Like any powerful reef break, it has risks. The hold-downs can be heavy, and the wave breaks with force. However, the vibe in the water is generally relaxed and friendly compared to other high-performance waves.
