Just south of Inside Ekas lies Outside Ekas Bay — a heavier, more powerful reef break that rewards confident surfers with long, hollow barrels and clean take-offs. Set beneath dramatic coastal cliffs, this spot comes alive on larger southwest swells, offering some of the most exciting surf on Lombok’s southeast coast. It’s a must-surf for advanced riders seeking performance waves and solitude.

From Ekas Inside, you can spot Ekas Outside by looking to the south while sitting in the lineup. The shifting peaks of Ekas Outside curve around under high cliffs about 4,000 feet away.

Typically, waves at Ekas Outside are 2-3 feet bigger than those at Ekas Inside, and on days with a southwest swell, they can be 5-7 feet larger. This makes Ekas Outside more suitable for advanced
surfers, although intermediates can enjoy it when the waves are smaller.

On larger days, Ekas Outside offers exciting conditions with waves that wedge and steepen, creating hollow almond barrels that can spit you out onto a ramp perfect for bottom turns. When the
waves are like this, you’ll often find some of the better surfers from south Lombok sharing the lineup, but the atmosphere remains friendly and relaxed.

Located roughly eight miles east of Kuta Lombok, the region’s largest town and main surf hub, Ekas is typically accessed by boat via the port in Awang town.

Outside Ekas FAQ

What is the main difference between Inside and Outside Ekas?

Power and size. While Inside Ekas is mellow and friendly, Outside Ekas picks up much more swell (usually 2-3 feet bigger, sometimes more). It is a heavier, faster wave that requires a higher skill level.

Can beginners surf Outside Ekas?

No. This spot is recommended for advanced surfers, especially when the swell kicks in. Intermediates might attempt it on very small days, but caution is advised due to the power of the wave and the distance from shore.

What conditions make Outside Ekas fire?

This spot comes alive on large Southwest swells. When big swells hit, the wave creates wedges and hollow “almond” barrels. North or Northeast winds are ideal for grooming the faces.

How do I get to the lineup?

Just like Inside Ekas, you take a boat from Awang. The boat ride is slightly longer as the spot is further out and more exposed to the open ocean, sitting beneath dramatic cliffs.

Is it dangerous?

Like any powerful reef break, it has risks. The hold-downs can be heavy, and the wave breaks with force. However, the vibe in the water is generally relaxed and friendly compared to other high-performance waves.
