Surf by Month

Lombok, Indonesia, is an increasingly popular destination for surfers, offering a wide range of waves suitable for all skill levels.

The island’s surfing conditions vary throughout the year, influenced by wind patterns, swell directions, and the wet and dry seasons.

Here’s a month-by-month breakdown of what surfers can typically expect:

During this month, Lombok experiences its rainy season, which can result in stormy conditions from time to time. However, the crowds are fewer, and most surf breaks in the area will still offer good sessions as there are more consistent surf breaks due to less wind.

Similar to January, February is part of the rainy season. Expect potentially wet conditions, especially on dirt access roads to beaches. The surf can be hit or miss, but uncrowded waves are a definite plus. And like January, the swell aligns more consistently for a good surf here at LMBK Surf House.

As the rainy season tapers off, the surf starts picking up. Swells are more consistent, and the winds are generally favorable for spots on the west coast, right next to LMBK Surf House generally begin pumping again during this time as well.

The transition into the dry season brings more clear conditions and the beginning of a great surfing period emerges. Swells become more powerful, and the wind often shifts to offer excellent conditions for a variety of breaks.

May sees the dry season in full swing. Lombok’s surf spots experience wet conditions, with more frequent and larger swells. LMBK Surf House is known for showcasing great breaks around the island, regardless of the season, never leaving a dull moment in your surfing adventure.

In June, the trade winds pick up, and swells can vary. LMBK ensures to make the most out of these typical windy conditions, working to find the right swell for all levels of surfers. This time can become generally busy, however, LMBK Surf House provides a sense of being on your own surfing retreat, surrounded by the LMBK family.

July offers great conditions throughout the island, with large, regular swells. The winds tend to pick up during this month, making the surf slightly more irregular. Expect the surf breaks to be more crowded, but the quality of surfing is top-notch.

An excellent month for surfers, August continues the trend with some elevated wind, but we always try to find a reliable swell for our guests. The surf can vary, but LMBK Surf House’s location provides the perfect conditions for all riders wanting to experience consistent surf breaks.

September maintains the high surf standards of the peak season, although the crowds might start to thin out as the month progresses. The conditions are still ideal for surfers of all levels looking for incredible waves.

As the dry season nears its end, October still offers good surf, but the changing winds can start to affect certain spots. However, it’s a good time to catch the tail end of high-season waves with fewer crowds at LMBK Surf House.

The wet season starts creeping in, which can bring less wind, benefiting surf breaks around LMBK Surf House, and more rain. However, early November still provides good surf conditions, especially at more sheltered spots.

Full rainy season conditions return in December. Surfing is still good but be prepared for less predictable weather and swell conditions. It’s a quieter time on the island, so you might get lucky with a few uncrowded sessions.

Local Weather Patterns

One fascinating aspect of Lombok’s weather is its local microclimates.

The island’s geography, featuring beaches, the massive Rinjani volcano, and varied elevations, creates distinct weather patterns in different areas.

For instance, the southern coast around Kuta tends to be drier, whereas the northern regions near the Gili Islands can experience slightly more rainfall.

Best Times to Visit Lombok for Surfing

Deciding the best time to visit Lombok depends largely on the activities you plan to enjoy.

For beach lovers, and surfers that don’t mind an uptick in wind, the dry season offers excellent conditions with the added beauty of crystal-clear waters.

Meanwhile, surfers, trekkers and climbers might prefer the early months of the wet season (October and November) when the paths are less dusty and the scenery is vibrantly green, though they should be prepared for occasional showers.

The wet season also offers less wind and sheltered spots for surfing.

Regardless of which season you prefer, LMBK Surf House offers activities for both the dry and wet seasons.
