The Break: Understanding the Left and the Right
Are Guling is a beautiful, semi-secluded bay that offers two distinct personalities depending on which side you paddle toward.
The Right: Predictable and Fast
The Right is the more popular choice for many surfers. It is a smooth point break that performs best at low to mid tide. It features a fast inside section that can provide a thrilling, predictable ride. On bigger days, a fun “inside” wave often forms at high tide, which is great for those looking for a shorter but punchy ride.
The Left: Hollow and Shifty
The Left is a bit more temperamental but highly rewarding. It is a hollow, shifty wave that requires more experience to read correctly. This side is best surfed at mid to high tide. If you are looking to test your tube-riding skills, the Left is where you will likely find a barrel when the swell is pumping.
Lombok Surf Seasons: When to Visit Are Guling
While Are Guling picks up swell all year round, the prime season is the Wet Season (October to April). During these months, the Northwest trade winds are light or offshore, creating clean, glassy faces.
In the Dry Season (May to September), the Southeast trade winds can be strong. However, you can still score great sessions by arriving at dawn or staying for sunset when the winds typically calm down.
LMBK Local Secret: The “Express” Paddle Out
The current in Are Guling bay can be quite powerful, but you can use it to your advantage. There is a natural rip current right in the middle of the bay. Instead of fighting the waves, jump into this “conveyor belt” and let it pull you out toward the lineup.
Pro Tip: When heading back to shore, don’t try to paddle straight against the current. Ride the whitewater on the inside all the way in to save your energy for the next set.
Directions: How to Get to Are Guling from Kuta Lombok
Are Guling is incredibly accessible for guests staying at LMBK Surf House.
By Boat: You can also take a 20-minute boat ride directly from Kuta beach. This is often the preferred method if you want to save your arms for the surf.
By Scooter: A scenic 20-minute drive west of Kuta. The roads are generally good, but watch for loose gravel on the final descent to the beach.
