Don-Don Technical Snapshot
Don-Don is a “swell filter.” When the outside breaks are too big or too heavy, Don-Don provides a safe and fun alternative. It is one of the most consistent waves for those looking to improve their technique.
| Wave Type | A-Frame Reef Break (Right and Left) |
| Best Swell Direction | South – Southwest (Handles big swells well) |
| Best Wind Direction | Any (It is very sheltered, but West is offshore) |
| Ride Length | 50m to 120m |
| Bottom Type | Deep Reef and Sand |
| Consistency | 8/10 (Works even when other spots are maxing out) |
The Break: The Ultimate Practice Peak
Don-Don is located in the middle of the bay, roughly halfway between the village and the “Outside” peaks. It is famous for its symmetry and its long, gentle walls.
The A-Frame: Lefts and Rights
Unlike many spots that favor one direction, Don-Don is a classic A-frame. The peak is well-defined, offering a soft right and a slightly longer, more mellow left. This makes it a fantastic spot for groups with both regular and goofy-foot surfers.
The Ride: Long and Predictable
The wave doesn’t “dump” or barrel; instead, it crumbles slowly. This gives you an incredible amount of time on the face of the wave to practice your bottom turns, cutbacks, and footwork. It is a favorite for longboarders who want to practice nose-riding in a stress-free environment.
Lombok Surf Seasons: When to Surf Don-Don
Don-Don is a year-round wave, but its quality is influenced by the winds:
- Wet Season (October to April): This is considered the best time for Don-Don. The Northwest winds are offshore, making the waves glassy and perfectly shaped.
- Dry Season (May to September): While the trade winds are technically onshore, Don-Don is so sheltered that it remains very surfable, especially in the early mornings before the wind reaches its peak.
LMBK Local Secret: The “Big Swell” Sanctuary
When a massive swell hits the south coast and spots like Mawi or Outside Grupuk are “triple overhead” and dangerous, head to Don-Don.
Pro Tip: Don-Don actually gets better as the swell gets bigger. When the ocean is “angry” outside the bay, Don-Don turns that energy into long, 4-foot lines that feel like a point break. If you are staying at LMBK Surf House, we track these big swell pulses to ensure you are at Don-Don when it is at its absolute best.
Directions: How to Get to Don-Don from Kuta Lombok
Accessing Don-Don involves a short drive followed by a boat trip:
Step 1: Drive your scooter 15-20 minutes east from Kuta to Gerupuk village. The road is paved and very easy to follow.
Step 2: Park at the harbor and hire a local boat (perahu).
Step 3: The boat ride to Don-Don takes about 7 to 10 minutes. The peak is located in the middle of the bay, clearly visible from the boat.
Don-Don’s Surf Guide FAQ
It is the “savior” spot of the bay. When other spots like Outside Gerupuk are too big or blown out, Don-Don’s holds the size well and stays organized, offering long, clean lines.
It’s a classic A-Frame, meaning you can go both ways. The Left tends to be steeper and better for turns, while the Right is often a bit softer and more forgiving.
No. Don-Don’s is famous for catering to all levels. Beginners can surf the shoulders or on smaller days, while advanced surfers can rip the long walls when the swell is pumping.
Like the other Gerupuk breaks, access is by local boat from the fishing village. It’s slightly further into the bay than Inside Gerupuk, but still a quick ride.
It usually works best around mid-tide. It’s important to coordinate with your boat driver to hit it when the tide is filling in or draining out for the best wave shape.
