Outside Grupuk Technical Snapshot

Outside Grupuk is a “swell magnet.” If there is any movement in the Indian Ocean, this spot will likely have a rideable wave. It is the go-to spot when the rest of the bay is too small.

Wave TypeRight-Hand Reef Break
Best Swell DirectionSouth – Southwest
Best Wind DirectionWest – Northwest (Offshore)
Ride Length50m to 150m
Bottom TypeDeep Reef
Consistency9/10 (One of the most reliable waves in Lombok)

The Break: Speed and Power

Outside Grupuk consists of a large, sloping peak that can hold massive swells. It is known for its steep drops and wide, open faces that are perfect for big carves and high-speed hacks.

The Peak

The wave starts with a vertical drop that quickly transitions into a fast-moving wall. Because the wave breaks in deeper water than some other reef spots, it has a lot of “push” behind it. On bigger days, it can offer short, intense barrel sections at the take-off zone.

The End Section

The wave eventually runs into deeper water in the channel. It is important to kick out before the wave shuts down on the shallower inside reef, especially during a dropping tide.

Lombok Surf Seasons: When to Surf Outside Grupuk

One of the best things about Outside Grupuk is its year-round consistency.

  • Dry Season (May to September): This is when the biggest swells arrive. Outside Grupuk handles size very well and can stay organized even when the swell is 8-10 feet.
  • Wet Season (October to April): It remains a great option, as the morning winds are often light or offshore. Even on “flat” days elsewhere, you can usually find a fun 3-foot wave here.

LMBK Local Secret: The “Boat” Strategy

Since you cannot paddle to Outside Grupuk from the shore, you have to take a local outrigger (perahu).

Pro Tip: Coordinate with your boat captain to stay out for a “double session.” The conditions at Outside can change quickly as the tide shifts. Sometimes, the crowd will leave when the tide gets too high, but that is often when the wave gets its best shape. If you are staying at LMBK Surf House, we organize these boat trips so you don’t have to negotiate on the docks.

Directions: How to Get to Outside Grupuk from Kuta Lombok

Outside Grupuk is located on the eastern side of the bay, roughly 20 minutes from Kuta.

Step 1: Drive your scooter 15-20 minutes east from Kuta to Grupuk village. The road is paved and easy to navigate.

Step 2: Park your scooter at the harbor.

Step 3: Hire a local boat to take you out to the “Outside” peak. The boat ride takes about 5 to 10 minutes.

Outside Gerupuk FAQ

What is the main difference between Inside and Outside Gerupuk?

The difference is power and difficulty. While Inside is soft and rolling, Outside Gerupuk offers fast, powerful walls and hollow sections. It is a high-performance wave for more experienced surfers.

Is it dangerous?

It can be if you aren’t prepared. The wave breaks over a shallower reef than the Inside, and the hold-downs are more significant. It is more exposed to open ocean swells.

What is the best tide for this spot?

Mid to High tide. At low tide, the reef becomes very shallow and the wave can become dangerously fast and “sectiony.” We always aim for the pushing mid-tide for the best experience.

Is Outside Grupuk good for beginners?

No. Beginners should stay at Inside Grupuk or Don Don, which are further inside the bay and much more mellow. Outside is too fast and powerful for those still learning the basics.

What kind of wave is it?

It is primarily a Right-hand reef break. It offers a shifting lineup with multiple peaks, often featuring a barrel section on the take-off followed by a high-performance wall.
