The Break: Forgiving Walls and Easy Rides
Inside Gerupuk is located deep within the bay, which strips away the “heavy” energy of the Indian Ocean, leaving behind smooth, organized lines.
The Main Right
The wave is famous for its “mellow” personality. It offers a slow, easy take-off followed by a long, tapering wall. This gives you plenty of time to set your rail and practice your turns. It is widely considered one of the best “learning” reef breaks in Indonesia.
Crowd Management
Because it is so user-friendly, it is a favorite for surf schools. However, the peak is quite wide, and there are often multiple take-off zones. If the main peak is busy, sitting slightly wider can still yield plenty of fun, long rides.
Lombok Surf Seasons: When to Surf Inside Gerupuk
Inside Gerupuk is a year-round wave, but its quality changes with the wind:
- Wet Season (October to April): This is the “prime” time for Gerupuk. The Northwest winds are perfectly offshore, making the faces glassy and clean.
- Dry Season (May to September): While the winds are technically onshore, the bay is so large and the wave so forgiving that it remains surfable most mornings before the trade winds get too strong.
LMBK Local Secret: The “Inside-Inside” Peak
On massive swell days when “Outside Gerupuk” is 10 feet plus, a secondary wave often forms even further inside the bay.
Pro Tip: If the main Inside peak feels too fast or crowded on a big day, look toward the shore. There is often a smaller, much softer wave that is perfect for those who want to avoid the main pack and just practice their balance in a calm environment. At LMBK Surf House, we always tell our guests to look for the “hidden” peak when the swell is pumping.

Inside Gerupuk FAQ
It is arguably the most “friendly” wave in the region. It’s a soft, rolling right-hander that breaks over a deep reef bottom, meaning you are very unlikely to hit the coral if you fall.
Yes. Inside Gerupuk is located in the middle of the bay. You must go to the Gerupuk fishing village and hire a local boat. The boatmen will drop you in the channel and wait for you. It’s a simple and affordable system.
It generally works best at mid to high tide. While the reef is deep, the wave can lose its shape or stop breaking properly on a very low tide.
Because it is consistent and beginner-friendly, it can get busy, especially with surf schools. However, the wave has multiple sections, allowing the crowd to spread out.
Not at all. While great for learning, intermediate surfers love the long walls for practicing cutbacks and turns. On bigger days, it offers long, fun rides that everyone can enjoy.
