The Break: Safe, Soft, and Fun
Selong Belanak is a postcard-perfect crescent bay with turquoise water and white sand. Because the waves break over sand rather than reef, it is the most forgiving spot on the island.
The Beginner Zone
The majority of the surf happens right in the center of the beach. The waves here are “mellow,” meaning they don’t dump or barrel. They provide a long, slow push that gives beginners plenty of time to find their balance.
The “Intermediate” Left
At the far southern end of the beach (to the left when facing the ocean), the waves can occasionally get a bit more punchy. This area is great for those who have mastered the basics and want to try a slightly faster take-off while still enjoying the safety of a sand bottom.
Lombok Surf Seasons: When to Surf Selong Belanak
Selong Belanak is a Wet Season favorite (October to April). During these months, the wind blows from the North, which is perfectly offshore for this bay. This creates glassy, clean conditions that are ideal for learning.
During the Dry Season (May to September), the wind can be cross-shore or onshore, making the water a bit choppier. However, because the bay is so protected, it remains surfable for beginners almost 365 days a year.
LMBK Local Secret: The Buffalo Parade
Selong Belanak is famous for more than just its surf. Every afternoon, local farmers lead their water buffalo across the sand.
Pro Tip: If you want the best photos, aim for a late afternoon surf session. You can catch the sunset waves and then watch the buffalo parade walk right past your board on the beach. It is one of the most iconic “Lombok” experiences you can have.
