Gili Trawangan Technical Snapshot
Gili T is a specialized spot. Unlike the south coast of Lombok, which works almost every day, Gili T needs specific “pulse” swells to wrap around the islands and create a rideable wave.
| Wave Type | Right-Hand Reef Break |
| Best Swell Direction | Large South – Southwest Swell |
| Best Wind Direction | Southeast (Offshore) |
| Ride Length | 50m to 100m |
| Bottom Type | Sharp Coral Reef |
| Consistency | 3/10 (Requires big swell to activate) |
The Break: Speed, Barrels, and Sharp Coral
The surf at Gili Trawangan is located on the south end of the island. It is a wave that demands respect due to the speed of the take-off and the shallow nature of the reef.
The Right-Hand Peak
When the conditions align, Gili T offers a world-class right-hander. It features a steep, fast take-off that leads directly into a hollow section. It is a dream for shortboarders looking for speed and the occasional barrel. Because the wave is fast, you need to stay “high in the pocket” to make the sections.
The Hazards
The reef here is notoriously sharp and shallow. Even at mid-tide, you are surfing over a carpet of coral and sea urchins. It is not a place where you want to have a heavy wipeout.
Lombok Surf Seasons: When to Surf Gili Trawangan
Gili T is strictly a Dry Season spot (May to September). This is because the wave requires a very large South or Southwest swell to “wrap” around the corner of Lombok and reach the Gilis.
During the Wet Season, the swell is generally too small and the winds are unfavorable. If the surf report for Kuta Lombok says “8-10 feet and washing out,” that is the perfect time to hop on a boat to Gili T.
LMBK Local Secret: The “Big Swell” Indicator
Many people spend weeks on Gili T without ever seeing a wave. The secret is knowing when to look.
Pro Tip: Watch the “Swell Period” on your forecast. You want to see a period of 14 seconds or higher. When those long-period swells hit the south of Lombok, the energy pushes through the Lombok Strait and “lights up” Gili T. At LMBK Surf House, we track these specific pulses for our guests who want to escape the south coast’s “maxing out” days.
Directions: How to Get to Gili Trawangan from Kuta Lombok
Getting to Gili T is a journey from our base in the south, but it’s a great way to see the island.
The Surf Location: Once on the island, the surf is a short walk or bicycle ride to the southern tip (near the cell tower).
By Land & Sea: Drive 1.5 to 2 hours north to Bangsal harbor, followed by a 15-minute public boat or “Fast Boat” to the island.
By Fast Boat: You can also take direct fast boats from Senggigi if you are already in the west.
Gili Trawangan Surf Guide FAQ
The main break is called “Secrets”, located off the southeastern coast of the island near the harbor. Despite the name, it is easy to find!
Yes! Unlike many heavy reef breaks, Secrets has a section near the end of the reef that offers mellow rides suitable for beginners, especially on medium-sized days. Always be mindful of the coral bottom, though.
The wave works best at mid to high tide. At dead low tide, the reef becomes very exposed, making it dangerous to surf or paddle in/out.
No. It has one of the easiest accesses in the Gilis. You can paddle out just 50 meters from the beach. Look for the “keyhole” (channel) in the reef to paddle out safely without walking on sharp coral.
It is the most energetic of the three Gili Islands. Famous for its nightlife, diving, and dining scene, it’s the perfect place to combine a surf trip with partying and social activities.
