Inside Ekas Technical Snapshot

Inside Ekas is highly reliable because it is tucked away from the raw power of the Indian Ocean. It turns large, messy swells into organized, crumbling walls that are easy to ride.

The Break: Long Rides and Soft Walls

Inside Ekas is known for its “mellow” personality. The wave typically breaks in a few different sections, allowing the crowd to spread out across the bay.

The Main Left

The take-off is gentle and predictable. Once you are up, the wave offers a long, sloping wall that is perfect for practicing your bottom turns and cutbacks. It is a favorite for longboarders and those on “funboards” because of the amount of time you get on the face of the wave.

The Right-Hander

While the left is the main attraction, there is also a shorter right-hander that breaks on the other side of the peak. It is usually faster and more “sectiony” than the left, but it can be a great option for regular-footers when the main peak is busy.

Lombok Surf Seasons: When to Surf Inside Ekas

Inside Ekas is a year-round destination. Because it is so deep within the bay, it is naturally protected from the strong trade winds that can blow out other spots.

  • Dry Season (May to September): This is the most popular time. Even when Outside Ekas is “maxing out” at 10 feet, Inside Ekas remains a manageable 3 to 4 feet.
  • Wet Season (October to April): It stays very consistent. The morning glass is usually spectacular, and the surrounding cliffs are lush and green.

LMBK Local Secret: The “Ekas Double” Strategy

The best way to experience Ekas is to time your session with the moving tide.

Pro Tip: Start your morning at Outside Ekas during the pushing mid-tide when the wave has more power. As the tide gets too high and the outside peak begins to “fatten out,” have your boat captain move you to Inside Ekas. The inside break often starts to “line up” perfectly just as the outside starts to slow down. At LMBK Surf House, we coordinate our trips to ensure you get the best of both worlds in a single boat mission.

Directions: How to Get to Inside Ekas from Kuta Lombok

Inside Ekas is a scenic journey into the rural heart of East Lombok.

Step 3: The boat ride to Inside Ekas takes about 10 to 15 minutes. It is a stunning ride that gives you a full view of the peninsula’s dramatic coastline.

Step 1: Drive your scooter or car roughly 50 to 60 minutes east from Kuta to Awang harbor. The road is well-paved and takes you through traditional Sasak villages.

Step 2: Hire a local boat (perahu) from the harbor.

Ekas Inside (Inside Ekas) Surf Guide FAQ

Is Inside Ekas safe for beginners?

Yes, it is one of the safest reef breaks in Lombok! The wave breaks over a very deep reef, minimizing the risk of hitting the bottom. It is the perfect playground for those learning or transitioning from white water to green waves.

What board should I bring?

Because the wave is generally slower and mellower (“fat”), it is heaven for longboards, funboards, or high-volume fishes. Intermediates on shortboards can also have fun hacking the right-hander.

How do I get to the wave?

Access is almost exclusively by boat. You need to drive to the port of Awang (about 30-40 minutes from Kuta) and hire a local boat, which will take you to the break in about 15 minutes.

What are the best conditions for Inside Ekas?

It works well year-round but thrives with a pushing tide (rising tide) and East winds (offshore). It can be surfed at low tide, but the wave shape improves significantly as the bay fills up.

Is it a left or a right?

It is an A-Frame, meaning it breaks in both directions. You get a slash-able right-hander and a left that is often a bit longer and great for cruising.
