The Break: High Performance and Hollow
Senggigi Reef is located just offshore from the main tourist strip. It is a wave that rewards patience and timing.
The Main Right
When a massive swell hits Lombok, Senggigi transforms. It starts with a steep, challenging take-off that leads into a fast, walling right-hander. On the best days, it can offer long, hollow sections that are perfect for experienced shortboarders looking for speed and power.
The Lineup
The lineup is usually friendly, but because the wave is right in front of the main town, it can get busy when the conditions are “on.” It is a deep-water paddle, so make sure your fitness is up to the task before heading out.
Lombok Surf Seasons: When to Surf Senggigi
Senggigi is a Dry Season spot (May to September). Because it sits on the west coast, it requires a significant South or Southwest swell to wrap around the corner of the island.
During the Wet Season, the winds often turn onshore for this part of the coast, making it messy. However, during the peak of the Indonesian winter (July and August), Senggigi can be one of the most exciting waves in the country.
LMBK Local Secret: The “Swell Magnet” Rule
If the surf reports for Kuta Lombok are showing “triple overhead” and the south coast is washing out, that is exactly when you should head to Senggigi.
Pro Tip: Senggigi needs size to work. If the swell is small in the south, it will be flat in Senggigi. Always wait for those “purple blobs” on the swell charts before making the trip from LMBK Surf House.
Directions: How to Get to Senggigi from Kuta Lombok
Senggigi is located north of the capital city, Mataram.
Stay Over: Because of the distance, many of our guests choose to spend a night in Senggigi if a big multi-day swell is forecasted.
By Scooter or Car: It is a long but beautiful journey. Expect a 1.5 to 2-hour drive from Kuta Lombok. The road is well-paved and takes you through the heart of the island and along the scenic coastline of the west.
Senggigi Surf FAQ
Senggigi offers a more urban and comfortable vibe. Unlike the rugged south coast, here you can surf and then walk straight into a luxury resort, a supermarket, or an international restaurant.
It can be on small days, but it is primarily an intermediate spot. The wave breaks over a reef, and while it is generally “rolling” and mellow, it requires some board control.
Being on the West Coast, Senggigi works best when the southern spots are too big or windy, or during large SW swells. It is a fantastic “Plan B” when Kuta is blown out.
Senggigi is Lombok’s original tourist hub. It’s a great base for organizing diving trips, snorkeling in the Gili Islands, or hiking Mount Rinjani. The nightlife is also more developed here than in rural areas.
It is located on the West Coast, just a short drive from the capital, Mataram. It’s about 1 to 1.5 hours from the airport or Kuta Lombok.
Yes, but only on mid-sized swells. The reef is sharp and can be shallow in sections. It is not a beginner wave. If you are not comfortable with steep take-offs over coral, we recommend staying in the south.
Mid tide. At high tide, the wave can lose its power and become “fat.” At dead low tide, the reef is very exposed and the wave can become dangerously fast and shallow.
Yes, there are a few other breaks further north toward the Gili Islands, but Senggigi Reef is the most consistent and famous high-performance wave in the area.
