Serangan Technical Snapshot

Serangan is a reliable “swell magnet” that works when other spots are too small. It provides a fun, rippable wall on both sides of the peak.

Wave TypeA-Frame (Left and Right)
Best Swell DirectionSouth – Southwest
Best Wind DirectionNorth – Northeast (Offshore)
Ride Length50m to 100m
Bottom TypeSoft Reef and Sand
Consistency8/10 (A very reliable backup spot)

The Break: A Peak for Everyone

Serangan is located in a stunning, untouched bay. The wave breaks over a relatively deep reef, which makes it less intimidating than some of the shallower point breaks in the area.

The Right: Fast and Fun

The right-hand side of the peak tends to be a bit faster and more direct. It offers a great wall for intermediate surfers to practice their turns and generate speed.

The Left: Mellow and Long

The left-hand side is often slightly more mellow, providing a longer, more predictable ride. It is a favorite for goofy-footers and longboarders looking for a smooth glide.

Lombok Surf Seasons: When to Surf Serangan

Like Are Guling, Serangan is a premier Wet Season spot (October to April). During these months, the North winds are offshore, creating perfectly groomed faces.

In the Dry Season, it can get hit by the Southeast trade winds, but because of the bay’s orientation, you can often find a clean window in the early morning before the wind picks up. It is a great year-round option for those staying at LMBK Surf House.

LMBK Local Secret: The “Middle” Peak

Most people congregate at the main A-frame peak, but Serangan actually has a few different take-off zones depending on the swell direction.

Pro Tip: If the main peak looks crowded, look slightly further down the beach. On bigger South swells, a secondary peak often forms that is much quieter and offers a punchy, shorter ride that is perfect for shortboarding.

Directions: How to Get to Serangan from Kuta Lombok

Serangan is located west of Kuta, near the famous Selong Belanak beach.

By Boat: While most people drive, boat access is possible from nearby bays if you are doing a coastal surf tour.

By Scooter: It is a beautiful 30 to 40-minute drive from Kuta. The road takes you through lush hills and traditional villages. The final turn-off to the beach can be a bit dusty, so drive carefully.

Serangan Reef FAQ

Is this the same “Serangan” as in Bali?

No. This is a common confusion! The famous Serangan is in Bali. This is Serangan Reef in Lombok, located inside the bay of Selong Belanak. It is quiet, rustic, and uncrowded.

Do I need a boat to surf here?

No. Unlike many Lombok spots, you don’t need a boat. You can park your scooter at the beach and paddle out or walk across the reef (booties recommended) to get to the break.

Is Serangan good for beginners?

On smaller days (2-3 feet), yes. It is a great place for beginners to transition to reef breaks because the reef is not overly sharp. However, when the swell is 5 feet or larger, it becomes a high-performance wave for advanced surfers.

Why is it considered “underrated”?

Most people go to Selong Belanak to learn or Mawi for barrels, skipping Serangan. This means you can often score high-quality waves with zero crowds.

What about the currents?

Currents can be strong here. The guide recommends surfing at mid to low tide or during “dead tides” (slack tide) to ensure the paddling is manageable.

What is the best tide for Serangan?

Mid to High tide. At low tide, the wave can close out, and the reef becomes much shallower. We always recommend checking the tide charts before making the drive.

Are there warungs at the beach?

Yes, there are a few local warungs where you can grab a cold coconut or a Nasi Goreng after your session. It is a very laid-back, “old school” Indo vibe.
