The Break: A Longboarder’s Dream
Tanjung Aan is a massive, horseshoe-shaped bay with crystal clear turquoise water. The waves break quite far out in the middle of the bay, making it a peaceful escape from the shore.
The Right: The Main Event
The right-hander is the star of the show. It is a slow-moving, peeling wave that gives you plenty of time to find your feet. It is ideal for practicing your cross-stepping or working on your bottom turns without the pressure of a heavy lip.
The Left: Shorter but Sweet
The left is usually shorter and a bit softer than the right, but it is a great option if the right side of the peak is getting crowded. It’s perfect for goofy-footers looking for a relaxed ride.
Lombok Surf Seasons: When to Surf Tanjung Aan
Unlike Are Guling, Tanjung Aan shines in the Dry Season (May to September). During these months, the trade winds are offshore, keeping the faces clean and glassy.
It does require a bit more swell than other spots to “activate.” If the swell is tiny everywhere else, Tanjung Aan might be flat. However, when a medium to large South swell hits, this bay transforms into a world-class longboard playground.
LMBK Local Secret: The “Lazy” Paddle Out
Tanjung Aan is a long paddle from the beach (about 15-20 minutes). While it’s great for your fitness, most locals and guests prefer to take a local outrigger boat (perahu) from the beach.
Pro Tip: For a few thousand Rupiah, a local boatman will drop you right at the peak and wait to pick you up. It saves your energy for the actual surfing and is well worth the small cost.
Directions: How to Get to Tanjung Aan from Kuta Lombok
Tanjung Aan is one of the easiest spots to reach from LMBK Surf House.
Parking: There is plenty of parking right on the beach where you can grab a coconut at a local warung after your session.
By Scooter: A stunning 15-minute drive east of Kuta. The road is paved and winds through beautiful coastal hills.
Tanjung Aan Surf FAQ
It is a longboarder’s paradise. The wave rolls gently over the reef for a long distance without closing out, allowing for nose-riding and a relaxed, classic style of surfing.
You have two options. You can paddle out (about 15-20 minutes), or you can pay a small fee to local boatmen on the beach for a drop-off. The boat is definitely the more relaxing option!
Yes! It is one of the safest and most forgiving waves in Lombok. The water is deep enough over the reef at mid-to-high tide that wipeouts are generally harmless.
Unlike Mawi or Gerupuk, Tanjung Aan works best in the wet season (November to March), when Northerly winds are offshore here. In the dry season, the trade winds can make it choppy.
It is arguably the most beautiful bay in South Lombok. Even if you aren’t surfing, the horseshoe-shaped bay with white sand and turquoise water is perfect for swimming or watching the sunset from Bukit Merese hill.
Yes, there are several local warungs that rent longboards and funboards right on the sand. However, if you are staying with us, we’ll make sure you have the perfect board from our LMBK Surfboard Collection.
Mid to High tide is essential. At dead low tide, the reef can become very shallow or even dry in some sections. Always check the tide chart before you paddle out.
