Belongas Bay Technical Snapshot
Belongas Bay (specifically the Mamanuk break) is a high-consequence wave that requires a significant swell to truly activate. It is not a daily spot, but when it’s “on,” it is world-class.
| Wave Type | Right-Hand Reef Break |
| Best Swell Direction | Large South – Southwest Swell |
| Best Wind Direction | East – Southeast (Offshore) |
| Ride Length | 50m to 120m |
| Bottom Type | Sharp Coral and Jagged Rock |
| Consistency | 4/10 (Needs a large “pulse” to wrap into the bay) |
The Break: Raw Power and Heavy Drops
The primary surf spot in Belongas Bay is Mamanuk, located on the western side of the bay’s mouth. This is a “real” wave that demands respect and proper equipment.
Mamanuk: The Main Right
Mamanuk is a fast, vertical right-hander that offers heavy take-offs and thick, powerful lips. It is a “down the line” wave that can offer intense barrel sections when the swell is large. Because of its exposure to the open ocean, the wave carries a lot of water and energy, making it much heavier than the waves in Kuta.
The Lineup
Due to the difficulty of reaching the spot and the intensity of the wave, the lineup is often empty or shared with only a handful of chargers. It is a deep-water peak, so a larger board (step-up) is often recommended to help you get into the wave early.
Lombok Surf Seasons: When to Surf Belongas Bay
Belongas Bay comes alive in the Wet Season (November to April), when North–Northwest monsoon winds blow offshore and large south swells wrap into the bay.
- The Swell: Like Desert Point, Belongas needs a large South or Southwest swell to “wrap” around the coastline.
- The Wind: During the dry season, the Southeast trade winds blow offshore for Mamanuk, keeping the heavy faces clean. In the wet season, this bay is often cross-shore or onshore and very messy.
LMBK Local Secret: The “Expedition” Mindset
Belongas is not a place you visit for a quick 1-hour session. It is a full-day mission that requires preparation.
Pro Tip: Because the bay is so remote, there are almost no facilities at the beach. We recommend bringing a full “strike kit”: extra leashes, plenty of water, a basic first-aid kit, and high-protein snacks. At LMBK Surf House, we treat Belongas trips as true expeditions for our most experienced guests.
Directions: How to Get to Belongas Bay from Kuta Lombok
The journey to Belongas is a scenic but long drive through some of Lombok’s most untouched landscapes.
The Final Approach: The road down to the bay can be steep and winding. Once you reach the village, you will typically need to hire a local boat (perahu) to take you across the bay to the Mamanuk peak, which takes about 10-15 minutes.
By Land: It is roughly a 1.5 to 2-hour drive west of Kuta. The road takes you through the hills of Sekotong and offers some of the best views on the island.
Belongas Bay Surf Guide FAQ
Belongas offers two distinct reef breaks: a short, punchy Right on the west side and a longer, hollow Left on the east side. Both offer power and consistency.
Yes, it is an adventure. The overland route requires a drive from Kuta followed by a challenging road that usually demands a 4×4 vehicle or an experienced driver. Many surfers prefer to access it via surf charter boats.
The ideal season runs from November to APril (the wet season), when north-northwest winds create clean offshore conditions for the incoming southern swells.
Rarely. Due to its remote location and difficult access, Belongas Bay is one of the few places in Lombok where you can still surf with very few people in the water, even on good days.
It is not recommended for absolute beginners due to the remote setting and reef bottom. However, it is a fantastic spot for intermediate surfers looking to escape the crowds without the extreme intensity of spots like Desert Point.
